Lived experience with hospice
“I’ve heard families say they felt just as taken care of as they felt their mom was taken care of.”

“This is one of the first places I can honestly say we do a really good job ensuring we care not only for the patient, but their family. And when I say family, I don’t necessarily mean blood- related; it’s anyone the patient chooses as their family—whoever is with that person, their people.”

“Having a binder takes pressure off of me to assist with my Mom’s death and her wishes. Creating it together can guide you to questions you never thought to ask.”

“That [working in palliative care] was my “aha” moment: we could be doing so much more to help people manage symptoms. Palliative care isn’t only necessary in the last hours or days—it can help people earlier in the journey to manage symptoms and have the best quality of life they can.”

“I want people to know the care they receive is very specialized care… We don’t just treat physical symptoms; we look at the whole person.”

“This building is full of joy, often. We have birthday parties and balloons, Christmas dinners—it’s not just a really sad place. It’s definitely sad at times, obviously, but there’s a lot more living here than just the sadness.”

“It was just the best possible version of a very sad story, you know? Obviously, really sad to see her go, but just being surrounded by family and so forth, I was like, ‘That’s how I want to go,’ you know? It’s kind of the best case.”

“We’re there from diagnosis through to bereavement. We can be there in an early stage and guide you along the way—from the very beginning—as you navigate the ups and downs and the various treatments that perhaps initially you wish to go for. And then that time when it’s finally okay—we’re all done; we’d like to go for that comfort care approach—and we’re there for that too. Once the person is gone, we honor that and help in the bereavement process as well.”
